We track every AI mashup mod, decompilation, static recompilation, native PC port and console jailbreak as it lands. Here's what 52 projects from the last ten weeks say about where gaming is heading.
Our wire covers the biggest drops. To check the patterns against the whole movement, we ran the same questions over the public awesome-decomp-games dataset: 2,046 decomp, recomp, port and remake projects covering 1,817 games, with 536,148 GitHub stars between them.
N64 games went native first: Pilotwings 64 and Wave Race 64 were built with the N64Recomp toolchain in September. In October the wave moved to Xbox 360. Spider-Man: Edge of Time, Fight Night Champion, The Simpsons Game, The Darkness, Peter Jackson's King Kong and Lost Odyssey all got static recompilations between 4 and 11 October, with The Darkness getting two rival versions. Static recompilation translates the original game code into native PC code, so there's no emulator underneath.
The tools are spreading sideways too. ReXGlue powers The Simpsons Game and Fight Night Champion, xboxrecomp brought the original Xbox's Mercenaries to Windows, and PS3Recomp v0.14 is already running a Twisted Metal port. Each new toolchain unlocks a whole console's library at once. Across the whole scene, the Xbox 360 now has 121 static recomps against the N64's 76, and PlayStation 1 is close behind with 50 releases in the last month.
Seven of the 13 mashups we track use Minecraft as one half: Skyrim, Elden Ring, Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA V, GTA IV and Modern Warfare 2 have all been crossed with it. Its blocky, moddable world is the easiest thing to drop into another engine, or to drop another game into. Elden Ring and GTA are the next most popular targets, with three mashups each.
There's a catch. Four of the 13 are still video clips with nothing to download, which is why a backlash calling viral mashups "fake" took off this month. Downloadable builds like SkyCraft (1,191 stars) and EldenCraft are what separate the real scene from the hype.
AI comes up in 12 of the 52 stories. The most-starred project we track is Universal Modder (7,410 stars), an open-source kit for building mashups with AI coding agents. Melty turned that into a one-click Windows launcher. On the port side, the Shadow of the Colossus PS2 recomp says it was written entirely by AI coding agents, and the Mercenaries port credits AI assistance.
The scene is split about it. Banjo: Recompiled's lead called an AI-generated Banjo-Tooie recomp "disrespectful" to years of research. Expect that argument to shape which projects the community backs.
Four takedowns hit the scene in 12 days. Look at what they targeted:
Publishers are going after projects that hand out their assets for free: browser ports, leaked code, playable copies. None of the 20 native ports we track has been taken down, and almost all of them make you bring your own copy of the game.

Ten years ago, bringing a console game to PC took a studio. Today a fan with a recompiler and an AI coding agent can do it in weeks, and someone with no code at all can mash two worlds together. Games are turning from finished products into raw material that anyone can rebuild, combine and run anywhere.
Over the next month, watch for more Xbox 360 and PS3 recomps as those toolchains mature, AI-made script mods arriving in InZOI on 15 October, and the next move in the PS5 firmware race.
