FREELANCER DECOMPILED: MICROSOFT'S 2003 SPACE GAME REBUILT FROM SOURCE
Freelancer (2003) client and engine rebuilt from source by reverse engineering, v1.0

The Freelancer Decomp project is a reverse-engineered reimplementation of the Freelancer (2003) game client and its engine DLLs, restored from the original binaries and built with modern Visual Studio. Every module the game loads is built from the repo's source, with only two third-party DLLs left from retail. Version 1.0 was tagged Oct 17. You bring the DATA folder from your own install, add the DirectX 8.1 SDK headers, and build the Release configuration to get a working freelancer.exe. It opens the door to fixes and mods for Digital Anvil's space sim.
You need: Your own installed copy of Freelancer (its DATA folder), Visual Studio 2022 with C++ and MFC, and the DirectX 8.1 SDK headers. No game data is included.
How to play PC on PC
- Clone the repo and copy the DATA folder from your own Freelancer install into its root.
- Add the DirectX 8.1 SDK include and lib folders, then build src\Freelancer.sln (Release|Win32).
- Run bin\freelancer.exe from the bin folder.
